What are the three main parts of a neuron? The cell body (soma), dendrites, and axon
What does the cell body (soma) do? It contains the nucleus and organelles needed for metabolism, growth, and cell maintenance.
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there? There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves.
Where do thoracic spinal nerves exit? All thoracic nerves exit below their corresponding vertebrae through the intervertebral foramina.
How does the endocrine system communicate with cells? Endocrine cells release hormones into the bloodstream to reach target cells throughout the body.
What are target tissues or target organs? Tissues/organs that contain receptors for a specific hormone.
How much blood does the human body contain? About 5 liters
What is the main function of blood? It transports oxygen and nutrients to cells and removes waste products.
What is the main job of the respiratory system? To perform gas exchange—bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide.
Besides gas exchange, what else does the respiratory system help us do? Smell (olfaction) and produce sound (voice).
