| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Acidosis | a condition where there's too much acid in the body, lowering blood pH (below 7.35) due to acid buildup or base loss |
| Alkalosis | a condition where body fluids become too alkaline (high pH), usually from losing too much acid or gaining too much base, leading to symptoms like irritability, muscle twitching, or confusion |
| Fluid balance | the relationship between the amount of fluid the body takes in and the amount it loses. |
| Renal | relating to, involving, or located in the kidneys |
| Acid-base balance | Maintaining the pH level of your blood |
| ADH | a brain-produced hormone released by the pituitary gland that controls your body's water balance by signaling kidneys to reabsorb water, reducing urine production and maintaining blood pressure and sodium levels |
| Aldosterone | a vital steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands that plays a central role in regulating the body's salt and water balance, thereby controlling blood pressure and potassium levels |
| ANP | a hormone regulating fluid/blood pressure |
| Angiotensin II | a powerful hormone and peptide that's the main effector of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System, primarily acting as a potent vasoconstrictor to raise blood pressure and regulate fluid balance |
| Kidneys | two bean-shaped organs, about fist-sized, located below the rib cage on either side of the spine |
