| theme | lesson of a story moral |
| statistic | fact with numbers example: 70% of the rainfall was during the afternoon. |
| anecdote | short story, usually paragraph length |
| creation story | a fictional story telling how something was created. tale of the hummingbird is this |
| emotionally charged words | words that give off an emotion examples: serene, rush, intensity |
| tone | the way the speaker sounds example: "Just fantastic. Now the road is blocked." is a sarcastic tone |
| connotation | when words give off or emphasize an emotion. example: shuddered gives off a scared emotion |
| denotation | the actual meaning of the word besides the emotion |
| lines | the lines in a poem...duh |
| line break | where a line breaks in a poem. Ex.: she was so beautiful I could faint |
| end-stopped line | a stop or pause in a poem that uses . or , |
| enjambed line | a line break but the sentence continues |
| rhyme scheme | ex.: AABB, ABAB, ABCB |
| reliability | how reliable a piece of info is |
| credibility | how much experience the author has on the topic |
| credentials | the experience the author has on that topic ex.: years of education, awards |
| stray | 1. to go away 2. ex: a stray cat |
| tresspass | to go somewhere you aren't supposed to go |
| mongrel | mix of breeds |
| waif | homeless person or animal |
| vexation | annoyance |
| darting | running quickly |
| hover | to watch over or to fly low to the ground |
