| Resting membrane potential | The membrane potential maintained by a nonconducting neuron’s plasma membrane |
| Stimulus-gated channels | ion channels that open in response to chemicals produced by a sensory stimulus or by a chemical stimulus received from another neuron |
| Action potential | the membrane potential of an active neuron |
| Epidural space | space is im-mediately outside the dura mater but inside the bony coverings of the spinal cord |
| Dermatome | Each skin surface area supplied by sensory fibers of a given spinal nerve |
| Perilymph | a fluid similar to cerebrospinal fluid, surrounds the membranous labyrinth and therefore fills the space between this membranous tunnel and its contents and the bony walls that surround it |
| Lacrimal apparatus | the structures that secrete tears and drain them from the surface of the eyeball |
| Cardiac cycle | consisting of contraction (systole) and relaxation (diastole) of both atria and both ventricles |

| Lacteals | lymphatic capillaries in the villi of the small intestine |
