Direct democracy A form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives
Representative democracy A system where citizens elect officials to make decisions on their behalf.
Legal pluralism The coexistence of multiple legal systems (state, Indigenous, religious) within one society.
What is natural law? The idea that universal moral principles and rights exist independently of government.
What is inherent to humans according to natural law? Universal moral principles and rights.
How can natural law be understood? Through reason.
Civil disobedience the public, non-violent refusal to comply with certain laws as a peaceful form of political protest.
Legislative branch The branch of government that creates and passes laws. Often, through debating and passing bills.
Executive branch The branch that enforces laws and manages government operations.
Judicial branch The branch that interprets laws and ensures they are applied fairly.
What is a responsible government? A system where the executive branch must have the support of the majority in the legislative branch to stay in power.
Who holds the executive branch responsible in a responsible government? The legislative branch.
Political representation Having elected officials who speak and make decisions on behalf of a group of people, like citizens in a country
What is a majority government? A government where the ruling party holds more than half the seats in a legislative assembly or parliament.
What does it mean for a party to hold more than half the seats? It means the party has a majority in the legislative assembly or parliament.
Minority government A government where the ruling party holds fewer than half the seats and must rely on other parties to pass laws.
Delegate model of representation A model where representatives mirror the interests of the public/represented
Descriptive representation Refers to the similarity between representatives and represented.
Substantive representation Theory of representation that says that anyone can represent any group (ex. a rich white guy can represent the interests of poor black people).
Electoral system A set of rules that decide how votes are cast, counted, and translated into seats in a legislature
Judicial review The power of courts to decide whether laws or government actions are constitutional.
Judicial independence The institutional structures between the judiciary, executive, and legislative branches
What is the definition of politics? Process of making decisions in groups.
What does politics influence in society? Competition of power and distribution of resources.
What question does politics address? Who gets what, when, and how.
What is a class definition of politics? How we choose to live together.
