What is normal blood pH? 7.35-7.45
What happens if pH drops below 7.35? Acidosis
What happens if pH rises above 7.45? Alkalosis
How do lungs lower pH when blood is too basic? slow breathing to retain carbon dioxide
How do lungs raise pH when blood is too acidic? Breathe faster and deeper to remove carbon dioxide
How do kidneys fix acidosis? excrete hydrogen ions and keep bicarbonate
What is metabolic acidosis caused by? Too much acid/loss of bicarbonate
What is metabolic alkalosis caused by? Too much bicarbonate/loss of acid
What is the role of buffer systems? prevent sudden changes in pH
What is the main buffer systems in the blood? Bicarbonate buffer systems
What increases acidity in the blood? More hydrogen ions
