Pharynx the muscle behind the mouth that helps swallow food
Epiglottis a small flap of tissue that covers the windpipe when you swallow
Esophagus a long tube that pushes food from the throat to the stomach using muscle movements
Stomach mixes food with acid and enzymes to begin breaking it down
Small Intestine where most digestion and nutrient absorption happens
Duodenum first part of the small intestine, receives food from stomach and mixes it with bile and enzymes
Jejunum middle part of the small intestine, absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream
Ileum last part of the small intestine, absorbs remaining nutrients before passing food into the large intestine
Cecum a pouch where the small intestine connects to the large intestine
Large Intestine absorbs water and electrolytes and forms solid waste
Ascending Colon moves material upward on the right side
Transverse Colon moves materials across the body
Descending Colon moves materials downward on the left side
Sigmoid Colon S-shaped area leading to the rectum
Rectum stores feces until its ready to be released
Anus the opening where waste leaves the body
Salivary Glands makes saliva, which moistens food and contains enzymes to start digestion
Teeth break and grind food into smaller pieces
Tongue helps move food around, swallow, and taste
Uvula small piece of tissue that hangs at the back of the throat and it helps with swallowing and speech
Liver makes bile, which helps breaks down fats and cleans toxins from the blood
Pancreas makes digestive enzymes and insulin to help control blood sugar
Appendix a small tube attached to the cecum and may play a role in immunity
Sphincters controls the movement of food or waste
Upper esophageal opens to let food into the esophagus from the throat
Lower esophageal (Cardiac) opens to let food into the stomach and closes to prevent acid from coming back up
Pyloric controls how much food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine
