What is Le Gouren, and where does it come from? Le Gouren is a traditional style of wrestling from Brittany, France. It is also called Breton wrestling.
How far back in history do people believe Gouren originated? It may have originated as early as the 4th century and is linked to Celtic traditions.
Who practiced Gouren in its early days, and how did that change over time? Initially practiced by nobles, it became popular among villagers and peasants over time.
What is the goal of a Gouren match? Explain what a “lamm” is. The goal is to throw the opponent so that they land flat on their back with both shoulder blades touching the ground. This is called a “lamm,” and it results in an immediate victory.
Describe the clothing that wrestlers wear during a Gouren match. Wrestlers wear a white jacket called a roched and black pants.
Name two other types of falls in Gouren besides a lamm. A kostin, which is a fall onto one shoulder, and a kein, which is a less perfect fall, such as onto the lower back.
What are some rules that show Gouren is focused on respect and safety? Wrestlers cannot hit or choke each other, must stay upright, follow referee instructions, and accompany their opponent safely to the ground to prevent injuries.
What is the ceremony or oath that wrestlers perform before a match, and why is it important? Wrestlers shout an oath promising loyalty, honor, and no brutality, and then embrace each other. This emphasizes respect, fair play, and the community aspect of the sport.
How has Gouren changed or grown in modern times (for example, internationally or for women)? Today there are around 1,600 licensed wrestlers in Brittany, women participate more, and international events exist through the International Federation of Celtic Wrestling (FILC).
