Lymphatic system

QuestionAnswer
What are the two most important functions of the lymphatic system? Maintenance of fluid balance and immunity.
What is the third, less important function of the lymphatic system? Absorption of lipids from digested food in the small intestine.
What is interstitial fluid called once it enters the lymphatic vessels? Lymph.
How many liters of plasma leak into tissue spaces daily, and how much is drained by the lymphatic system? 20 liters leak; 17 liters reabsorbed by blood vessels; 3 liters drained by lymphatics.
What condition results from blockage or damage to the lymphatic system, causing fluid buildup? Lymphedema.
Name the primary lymphatic organs. Bone marrow and thymus.
Name the secondary lymphatic organs. Lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT).
What is the “lymphatic pump”? The movement of lymph aided by skeletal muscle contractions, breathing movements, and vessel valves.
What are the two major categories of immune mechanisms? Innate (non-specific) and adaptive (specific).
Which immune cells destroy abnormal cells without prior exposure? Natural killer (NK) cells.
What protein signals neighboring cells to resist viral infection? Interferon.
What is the role of antibodies? To recognize, bind, and neutralize specific antigens.
