TermDefinition
Action Potential The rapid all-or-nothing electrical impulse that propagates along the membrane of excitable cells like neurons and muscle cells.
Central nervous system The brain and spinal cord. The command center for processing information and coordinating functions like thoughts emotions and movement.
Peripheral nervous system Reaches part the CNS doesn't and sends signals connecting the CNS to the rest of the body.
Autonomic nervous system Responsible for control of the body functions that are not consciously directed such as breathing, heartbeat, and digestive process.
Endocrine system A network of glands and organs that produce and secrete hormones that work as chemical messengers.
Blood pressure The force exerted by circulating blood on artery walls and is regulated by the interplay of cardiac output, peripheral resistance, and blood volume.
Lymphatic system Maintains fluid levels in our body tissues by removing all fluids that leak out of our blood vessels.
Immune system Function includes protecting the body from infection and disease by recognizing repelling and eradicating foreign invaders like bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Gas exchange Process of moving oxygen into the body for cellular respiration and removing carbon dioxide. Ensures oxygen is supplied to all tissues for energy production.
Digestion Breaks down food into nutrients through mechanical and chemical means. Starts in mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, then rectum for elimination.
