QuestionAnswer
What are minerals? Minerals are micronutrients that are vital, for healthy body function.
What groups are minerals classified into? Macrominerals are minerals needed in large amounts,e,g calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium Trace minerals are needed in small amounts,e.g iron, flouride, iodine, zinc.
What is calcium? A macromineral.
Name the sources of calcium Milk, cheese, yogurt,
What are fortified products? Products that have nutrients added to them for health reasons or to replace nutrients lost during manufacturing.
What are the functions of calcium? s strong healthy bones and teeth in children and teens, good bone density(hardness) in adults and older people.
What is needed for calcium to be absorbed by the body properly? Vitiman D.
Why does calcium maintain good bone density? Because in our bones there’s tiny holes but in the bones of someone with deficiency disease or calcium holes will be bigger and their bones will be weaker and easily broken,so the calcium makes the holes like stay smaller to maintain the hardness of bones
What are the calcium deficiency diseases? Rickets and osteoporosis.
What is rickets? Rickets only occurs in children and happens when there’s problems with bone formation when there is lack of calcium and/or vitiman D in the diet. Bones do not harden properly during childhood causing bow legs, deformed spine, and frequent fractures.
What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis only occurs in adults,it’s a bone disease that causes bones to become weak and break easily, common in older women.
Why is osteoporosis common in older women? Because women over 30 can’t produce more calcium and their stuck at the same level forever so if their pregnant when the baby is born it steals a lot of the woman’s calcium leading to a calcium deficiency disease in some.
