Functions of the spleen Defense, Tissue repair, Hematopoiesis, Red blood cell destruction/Platelet destruction
Functions of the spleen 2 Blood reservoir, helps restore blood to the circulatory system if needed, holds about 350ml, very vascular organ.
Lymphatic Vessels Collect fluids that drain from tissues of the body (lymph) and return back to the blood
Lymphatic capillaries Transport lymph to larger lymphatic vessels, Collect tissue fluid that forms lymph
Lymphatic ducts Collect lymph from the network of lymphatic vessels and drain it back into the blood circulation
Lymphoid organs Hematopoiesis immunity (WBCs) also filters body fluids
Lymph nodes Filtration of lymph before it enters the bloodstream, Mechanical filtration removes particles
Aggregated lymph nodules Immunity at common points of entry for pathogenic microbes (think Tonsils)
Thymus Hematopoiesis – site of T cell development also produces hormone thymosin that regulates T cell development
Spleen Tissue repair, destruction of old RBCs, Bood reservoir, blood filtration, Hematopoiesis immunity (WBCs)
