How was a plantation owners wealth measured? By the number of slaves they owned.
What does it mean to secede? To withdraw formally from an alliance, federation, or association, as from a political union, a religious organization, etc.
What does secession mean? An act or instance of seceding.
What does sectionalism mean? Belief that your home, school, state, region of the country is best and most important, just because it's where you are.
What was more important your state or your nation? Your state was more important.
Economically what did the North have? Industrial Economy (factories), Large Cities, Interdependent, and they Counted on the Government more.
Economically what did the South have? Agricultural (cotton), Yeoman Farmers (middle class), Rural, and Self-sufficient.
What did most of the US's income come from? Tariffs and Taxes.
What did tariffs cause Southerners to pay more for? Goods and reduced cotton exports.
What percentage did of tariffs were collected from Southerners? 83%.
What were the states rights? The belief that states are sovereign subject to no higher power except for the powers granted to the federal government in the constitution.
What is Nullification? States rights based belief that individual states could determine if a law violated the constitution and if it did, they could ignore it within their state.
What did the "Tariff of Abominations" cause South Carolina to do? It caused them to threaten to secede if the Tariff was not rescinded.
What did the legislation admit Missouri and Maine as during the Missouri Compromise? They admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a non-slave state.
What's Abolition (talking about slavery)? The movement to abolish slavery.
What did William Lloyd Garrison publish and what was it about? He wrote "The Liberator" an abolitionist newspaper.
What did Fredrick Douglas do? He gave speeches, wrote articles, and raised money for the cause.
What did Harriet Beecher Stowe write and what did it support? Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote "Uncle Toms Cabin" which supported Abolition.
What did Texas join the US as in 1845? They joined as a slave state.
Where did most of the US acquire most of their southwest land from? From Mexico.
What did the gold rush cause people to do? It caused them to move to California.
In 1849 what did California ask to join the Union as? They asked to join as a free state meaning there would be 16 free states and 15 slave states.
What was the South afraid of happening? They were afraid this would allow Congress to limit or end slavery.
What would slavery be decided by because of the Compromise of 1850? It would be decided by popular sovereignty in the admission of the new states.
What did the Compromise of 1850 prohibit? It prohibited the slave trade.
What did the Compromise of 1850 establish? A stricter fugitive slave act.
What did the Compromise of 1850 allow law enforcement to do? It allowed them to arrest anyone suspected of being a runaway slave.
What did the Kansas-Nebraska act create? It created territories and opened new lands for settlement, repealed the Missouri Compromise.
What did popular sovereignty lead to Kansas being called? It led to Kansas being called "Bleeding Kansas."
What did the Dred Scott Decision cause the Supreme Court rule slaves as? They ruled slaves as not being citizens and not included by the constitution.
What did John Brown at Harper's Ferry do? He raided a federal arsenal (place of gun storage) hoping to start a slave rebellion.
Who was John Brown? A hero to abolitionist and a symbol of evil to slaveholders.
What happened to John Brown in 1859. He got hanged.
In 1860 what percentage of 11800 Georgia families owned slaves. 35% of Georgia families owned slaves.
How many slaves did most families own? 6 slaves or fewer.
How many Georgia families owned 30 to 100 slaves? 3500 families.
How many planters owned more than 100 slaves? 212 planters.
How many planters owned more than 200 slaves? 23 planters.
What percentage did Lincoln get for the popular vote. He got 40%.
What did Lincoln endorse and encourage? The passage of the Corwin Amendment.
What did the Corwin Amendment do? It made it so only the states can outlaw slavery.
What did 7 states do by February? 7 states seceded, including Georgia.
What did the confederate states of America form as on February 4, 1861? They formed as a new government of the seceded states.
What was Lincolns 1st promise? Promise 1 was to not interfere with the institution of slavery and would collect his taxes.
How was the North ready for war? They had 22 million people, 85% more factories, more and better railroads, and established Army and Navy.
How was the South ready for war? They had 9 million people (5.5 million not including slaves), most textile factories, railroad made to take cotton to market, militia only, and martial tradition with the best generals.
What were two Civil War firsts? A Steel Ship and Flame Throwers.
Where and when were the first shots of war? Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861.
What made rifle fire much more deadly? The 58 Caliber Mini ball.
What produced terrible wounds and easily shattered wounds? The Minie ball.
Who did Lincoln ask to be his general? Lincoln asked Lee.
How long did both sides think the world would be? They both thought it would be 90 days.
What was the 1st major battle of the Civil War? 1st Bull Run.
Who won the 1st Bull Run? The South Won.
What was the North's strategy to win? The Anaconda Plan.
What was the Anaconda Plan? The North's plan to block all Southern shipping and cut the South in half at the Mississippi. Its would prevent the South from selling cotton and limit their ability to purchase weapons from Europe.
What was the South's Plan? The King Cotton Diplomacy.
What was the King Cotton Diplomacy? The South's Plan to have Europe demand for cotton would force them to recognize the South as a country and break the blockade.
What were blockade runners? They were fast ships.
What did the Supreme Court rule only Congress could do to Habeas Corpus? Only Congress could suspend Habeas Corpus which Lincoln ignored.
What's Habeas Corpus? A writ of Habeas Corpus is a judicial mandate to a prison official ordering that an inmate be brought to court so it can be determined whether or not a person is imprisoned lawfully.
Had members of the ____ legislature to prevent ____. Maryland; secession.
What did they close hundreds of critical of the war? They closed hundreds of newspapers.
What's General Order #100? General Order #100 made it legal for the Union Army to starve civilians.
What did Ohio Congressman Clement Vallandigham get arrested for? He got arrested for protesting the war and was therefore deported.
How many battles were in the war of 1862? There were 37 battles.
What was the 2nd Bull Run? Shiloh was the 2nd Bull Run.
What was the bloodies battle of the war in 1862? Antietam was the bloodiest 1 day battle (estimates of 23000 casualties).
What was the 1st major Union victory? Shiloh, 2nd Bull Run.
When was the Emancipation Proclamation? September 22, 1862.
What did it give the Confederate states until January 1, 1863 to do? It gave them until January 1, 1863 to surrender if they wanted to keep their slaves.
What would happen if they did't surrender? All slaves in those states in rebellion are declared free.
What did the Emancipation Proclamation not do? It did not free any slaves in areas under union control including the border slave states.
What was the original reason of the war? To preserve the union.
After the Emancipation Proclamation what was the cause? To free the slaves.
What did this cause the European countries to do? It caused them to no longer support the South and ended all hope of the King Cotton Diplomacy.
What did this cause to happen in New York? It caused draft riots in New York and massive desertion by Union soldiers.
What could all single men ages 18-35 do to not get drafted? They could pay $300 or hire substitute to not go.
What could all men ages 17-45 do to not get drafted? They could exempt if they owned 20 or more slaves.

What did the Draft-Conscription not free? It didn't free any slaves.
What happened to the slaves when the union took control? The slaves were liberated.
What did the 13th amendment end on December, 1865. It ended slavery in the US.
When did the formation of all black military units began? It began after the Emancipation Proclamation.
By the end of the war what percentage of the union army was black? And what percent were slaves? 10% of the union army was black and 80% of them had been slaves.
What was the turning point of the war? Gettysburg.

What did general Lee hope would happen going into Pennsylvania? He hoped it would cause the Northerners to call for peace.
What did they stop at Gettysburg for? They stopped there for the shoe factory.
