TermDefinition
Cephalic Phase Triggered by sight, smell, or thought of food. Starts gastric secretion before food enters the stomach.
Gastric Phase Begins when food reaches the stomach and stimulates gastric juice release.
Intestinal Phase Controls the rate of stomach emptying; slows gastric secretion.
CCK (Cholecystokinin) Hormone that triggers pancreatic enzyme release and contracts the gallbladder to push bile into the duodenum.
Defecation The act of expelling feces.
Digestive Enzymes Chemicals secreted into the GI tract to break down food molecules into smaller units.
Peristalsis Wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract.
Deglutition The process of swallowing; includes oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal stages.
Absorption Movement of nutrients from the GI tract into blood or lymph.
Gastric Inhibitory Peptide Hormone that slows gastric motility when fatty chyme enters the duodenum.
