Bottom up processing: builds a final understanding from the smallest sensory details up to a complete interpretation
Top down processing brain uses existing knowledge, expectations, and context to interpret new sensory information
Absolute threshold the minimum intensity of a stimulus that a person can detect at least 50% of the time
Just noticeable difference/difference threshold the smallest amount by which two sensory stimuli can differ in order for an individual to perceive them as different
Signal detection theory a framework for measuring how people make decisions under conditions of uncertainty by distinguishing between a "signal" and background "noise”
Somnambulism a sleep disorder that involves walking or performing other complex behaviors while in a state of deep sleep
Delta waves waves of stage 3 NREM sleep, which is characterized by deep, restorative, and often dreamless rest
