| maladaptive behavior | behavior that makes it difficult to function, to adapt to the environment, and to meet everyday demands |
| insanity | a legal term (not psychological) referring to an inability to manage one's affairs or be aware of consequences |
| DSM | the acronym for the American Psychiatric Association's manual used to classify psychological disorders |
| biopsychosocial model | the perspective that psychological disorders result from the interaction of biological, socio-cultural, and psychological factors |
| panic attack | a sudden, intense episode of unexpected panic, often accompanied by chest pain, choking, and a fear of dying |
| agoraphobia | an intense, irrational fear of being in a public place or unfamiliar situation where escape might be difficult or a panic attack might occur |
| obsession | recurring, intrusive, and unwanted images or thoughts that cause anxiety |
| compulsion | irrational acts that a person feels compelled to repeat to help control anxiety created by obsessions |
| PTSD | a disorder lasting more than one month after a traumatic event, characterized by re-experiencing the event, avoidance, and emotional numbing |
| dissociative identity disorder (DID) | a disorder where a person has two or more distinct, separate identities or personality traits (formerly multiple personality disorder) |
| illness anxiety disorder | a constant fear of illness and preoccupation with health, interpreting normal bodily signs as proof of a terrible disease |
| conversion disorder | a somatic symptom disorder that involves an actual physical disturbance (like paralysis) with a purely psychological cause |
| bipolar disorder | a mood disorder in which a person alternates between periods of mania (wild elation) and periods of depression |
| phototherapy | the treatment involving extended exposure to bright light typically used for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) |
| delusion | a false belief that a psychotic individual holds despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary (ex delusion of grandeur) |
| flat affect | a negative symptom of schizophrenia characterized by a lack of emotional responsiveness |
| dopamine hypothesis | the theory suggesting that schizophrenia is caused by excess activity in brain areas that uses dopamine |
| antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) | a cluster B disorder characterized by a lack of guilt or remorse for one's actions, often engaging in illegal situations |
| borderline personality disorder (BPD) | a cluster B disorder characterized by dramatic emotional instability, fear of abandonment, and impulsive behavior |
