Heart Vocab

TermDefinition
Aorta The biggest artery; carries blood from the heart to the body.
Left Ventricle Pumps oxygen-rich blood out to the body.
Right Ventricle Pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
Left Atrium Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.
Right Atrium Receives oxygen-poor blood from the body.
Coronary Artery Arteries that supply blood to the heart itself.
Apex The tip or bottom point of the heart.
Superior Vena Cava Brings blood from the upper body to the right atrium.
Inferior Vena Cava Brings blood from the lower body to the right atrium.
Pulmonary Artery Carries blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Cordae Tendinea “Heart strings” that help heart valves open and close.
Papillary Muscles Muscles that pull on the cordae tendineae to control valves.
Septum Wall that separates the right and left sides of the heart.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between the right atrium and right ventricle.
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve Valve between the left atrium and left ventricle.
Aortic Semilunar Valve Valve between the left ventricle and the aorta.
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve Valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery.
Brachiocephalic Artery A big branch off the aorta that supplies the head and right arm.
Left Main Coronary Artery Main artery supplying the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies the front of the heart.
Circumflex Coronary Artery Supplies the left side and back of the heart.
Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies the back/bottom of the left
Right Coronary Artery Supplies blood to the right side of the heart.
Posterior DescendingCoronary Artery Supplies the back/bottom of the heart.
