Patterns Earth & Sky

TermDefinition
Space The huge area outside Earth’s atmosphere where the stars, planets, and moons are found.
Planet A large, round object in space that orbits (goes around) a star.
Sun's Size How big the Sun is compared to other objects. The Sun is much larger than Earth.
Solar System The Sun and all the planets, moons, rocks, and dust that travel around it.
moon A natural object that orbits a planet. Earth has one moon.
burn How the Sun and stars give off light and heat through burning gases.
star brightness How much light a star gives off and how bright it looks from Earth.
constellation A group of stars that make a pattern or picture in the sky.
galaxy A huge group of billions of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity.
visible Something you can see.
astronomical Something related to space, stars, planets, or the universe.
eclipse When one space object blocks light from another, like the Moon covering the Sun.
celestial Anything that exists in space, like stars, planets, or moons.
comet A small icy object that orbits the Sun and glows as it gets close.
light year The distance light travels in one year. It measures very large distances in space.
astronomical unit A unit of distance equal to the space between Earth and the Sun.
stellar circular motion The movement of stars in a curved or circular path across the sky.
universe Everything that exists—space, time, stars, planets, and galaxies.
axis An imaginary line a planet spins around.
Milky Way The galaxy that contains our solar system.
moon phases The different shapes of the Moon we see from Earth as it orbits us.
lunar Anything related to the Moon.
orbit The path an object takes as it moves around another object.
tilt A slanted position. Earth is tilted as it spins, which causes seasons.
annual Happening once every year.
Sun The star at the center of our solar system that gives Earth heat and light.
gravity A force that pulls objects toward each other.
Space The huge area beyond Earth’s air where the stars, planets, and moons are found. It is mostly empty and has no air or gravity like we feel on Earth.
flow How something moves from one place to another, like energy or electricity.
magnet An object that can pull certain metals toward it.
period (time) A length of time between repeating events.
charge A property of matter that causes electric forces—positive or negative.
Earth's rotation Earth spinning on its axis once every 24 hours.
spherical Shaped like a ball.
exert To apply a force or push on something.
transfer To move something from one place to another, like energy or heat.
mass The amount of matter in an object.
orbital Related to an orbit or path an object follows around something else.
volume The amount of space something takes up.
rotation When a planet spins on its axis.
revolution When one object travels all the way around another object.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
