Heart Flashcards

QuestionAnswer
Aorta Largest artery; carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body.
Left Ventricle Pumps oxygenated blood to the body through the aorta; has the thickest muscular wall.
Right Ventricle Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery.
Left Atrium Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins.
Right Atrium Receives deoxygenated blood from the body via the superior and inferior vena cava.
Coronary Artery Supplies oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle.
Apex Pointed tip of the heart, formed by the left ventricle.
Superior Vena Cava Returns deoxygenated blood from the upper body to the right atrium.
Inferior Vena Cava Returns deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the right atrium.
Pulmonary Artery Carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Cordae Tendinea Tendon-like cords that anchor the AV valves to papillary muscles.
Papillary Muscles Muscles inside ventricles that pull on chordae tendineae to stabilize AV valves.
Septum Wall dividing the left and right sides of the heart.
Tricuspid Valve Between the right atrium and right ventricle; prevents backflow.
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve Between the left atrium and left ventricle; prevents backflow.
Aortic Semilunar Valve Between the left ventricle and aorta.
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve Between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Brachiocephalic Artery First major branch of the aortic arch; supplies blood to the right arm and head/neck.
Left Main Coronary Artery Primary left-sided coronary artery that branches into the LAD and circumflex.
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies the anterior wall of the left ventricle and septum; known as the “widowmaker” when blocked.
Circumflex Coronary Artery Supplies the left atrium and lateral wall of the left ventricle.
Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery Variant artery descending on the posterior side; not present in everyone.
Right Coronary Artery Supplies the right atrium, right ventricle, and part of the inferior left ventricle.
Posterior Descending Coronary Artery Runs along the posterior interventricular sulcus; most commonly branches from the RCA.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
