What is top the top down approach? Two preestablished types of offenders, assume one and then find evidence to support it. The american method
What is the bottom up approach? Forming a conclusion based on the evidence present at a crime scene. The english method

What are the three key features of investigative psychology? 1. Interpersonal coherence 2. Forensic awareness 3. Time and place
What is Circle theory (1993)? two categories of killers marauders - commit crimes in close proximity to anchor point (better understanding of area) commuters - travel significant distance to avoid recognition ("throw off the scent")
What is Lombroso's Atavistic form? Theory that physical features can influence propensity to crime. Features are those of primitive ancestors "homo-delinquent"
How many features do men and women need to be classed as atavistic? Men = 5+ Women = 3+
What are some features of murderers, thieves, and rapists? Murderers: - bloodshot eyes - hooked nose - prominent cheek bones Thieves: - small face - lazy eyes - thin fingers Rapists: - glittering eyes - curling hair - mix of thieves and murderers
Outline Lombroso's 1870 research into atavism - 383 dead criminals - 3839 living criminals Procedure: examined facial and cranial features Results: 40% of criminals committed by people with atavistic features

What is the diathesis-stress model? preexisting genetic vulnerability triggered by environmental stressor
