| upper respiratory tract | composed of the nose, nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx, and larynx |
| nasal septum | consists of the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, the vomer, and the septal and vomeronasal cartilage |
| respiratory mucosa | ciliated epithelium that exhibits numerous goblet cells that produce and release mucus |
| Pharyngeal tonsils | are located in the nasopharynx on its posterior wall opposite the posterior nares |
| oropharynx | located behind the mouth from their soft palate above to the level of the hyoid bone below |
| nasopharynx | located behind the nose and extends from the posterior nares to the level of the soft palate |
