Migrating motoring complex (MMC) A pattern of rhythmic contractions in the stomach and small intestine that sweeps undigested food, bacteria, and debris towards the colon during fasting periods ( between meals or overnight )
deglutition medical term for swallowing the complex process of moving fluid or liquid from the mouth to the stomach through the pharynx and esophagus
mastication the process of chewing or crushing food with your teeth to break it down into smaller pieces.
enteric nervous system (ENS) a complex network of nerve cells in the gut wall that regulates digestive functions independently of the brain.
Absorption the process where one substance is taken into and incorporated into the bulk of another substance, rather than just on the surface.
Digestion the process of breaking down food into smaller molecules that the body can absorb for energy and growth
Ingestion taking a substance (food, liquid, medicine, toxin) into the body through the mouth and into the digestive tract, involving the digestive tract. (Eating, drinking, and swallowing)
peristalsis is a progressive type of movement in which material is propelled from point to point along the gastrointestinal
chyme thick milky material produced from food churned with gastric juices
propulsion the process of chyme continually being pushed toward the pyloric sphincter by waves of peristaltic contractions
