OCHEM Final Exam

IR Spectra

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 parameters we must look at when looking at IR? 1) Frequency (wavenumber) 2) Intensity (depth) 3) Shape (wide, sharp, etc.)
Where is the fingerprint region and what does it show? 500 - 1500, shows all of the single bonds of w/in a molecule - analysis not often done here
What/where is the most important region for analysis? - 1500 - 3000 - Diagnostic /Functional Group Region
500 - 1500 Single Bonds (aka Fingerprint Region)
1550 - 1800 Double Bonds
2000 - 2200 Triple Bonds
2800 - 4000 Hydrogen Bonds (NOT IMF, anything bound to Hydrogen)
What does a shorter frequency range/ more narrow peak mean? Less places to bond to - ex: bonding to only one oxygen rather than two
1370 - 1450 Methyl Group Bends
1050 - 1250 C-O single bond stretches
2850 - 2960 Aliphatic C-H stretch
1450 - 1600 Arene Ring
3200 - 3650 O-H stretch (alcohol)
3350 - 3500 N-H stretch
2750 - 2850 Aldehyde Carbon-Hydrogen Bond (they're a pair, two fangs)
1650 - 1780 Carbonyl Carbon Oxygen DOUBLE bond stretch
2220 - 2260 Nitrile triple bond stretch
