QuestionAnswer
What are the two major divisions of the nervous system? The central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What organs make up the CNS? The brain and the spinal cord
What is the main job of the CNS? To receive information, interpret it, and create responses to maintain homeostasis.
What makes up the PNS? The 31 pairs of spinal nerves, 12 pairs of cranial nerves, and all branching nerves.
What does the autonomic nervous system (ANS) control? Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands—mostly without conscious effort
How does the nervous system send signals Through nerve impulses carried by neurons.
How do neurotransmitters work? They are chemical messengers released by neurons that bind to receptors on target cells.
What is the main function of the circulatory system? To pump blood that carries oxygen and nutrients to tissues and removes waste.
What does the lymphatic system do with excess fluid? It drains extra interstitial fluid and returns it to the bloodstream
What is the primary function of the digestive system? To bring nutrients into the body so cells can use them for energy and growth
