QuestionAnswer
What is the functional unit of the nervous system? The neuron which sends and receives electrical and chemical signals.
What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system? The sympathetic system prepares the body for stress “fight or flight”, while the parasympathetic system restores calm “rest and digest”.
What is the role of the sodium-potassium pump in a neuron? It maintains the resting membrane potential by moving sodium out and potassium into the cell.
What structure in the eye controls the amount of light entering the retina? The pupil which changes size through the muscles of the iris.
What is a hormone? A chemical messenger released by endocrine glands that regulates body functions.
What are the three major formed elements in blood? Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
What is cardiac output? The amount of blood the heart pumps per minute.
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs? In the alveoli where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves the blood.
What is tidal volume? The amount of air moved in or out of the lungs during a normal breath.
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system? To return excess fluid to the bloodstream and support immune defenses by filtering pathogens.
