What is the primary difference between axial and appendicular muscles? Axial muscles support and move the head, neck, and trunk, while appendicular muscles control movement of the limbs and girdles.
What are the main types of cells in the nervous system? Neurons (signal transmission) and glial cells (support, nutrition, protection).
What are the two main divisions of the nervous system? Central nervous system (CNS: brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (PNS: nerves outside CNS).
What are the two branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and their primary functions? Sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest).
Which sense relies on photoreceptors, and what are the two main types? Vision; rods (light sensitivity) and cones (color).
What are the four chambers of the heart? Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle.
What is the main function of red blood cells (erythrocytes)? To carry oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and transport carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system? To return interstitial fluid to the blood, absorb fats, and help defend against pathogens.
What muscle plays a major role in breathing? Diaphragm.
Name two major axial muscles involved in posture. Erector spinae and rectus abdominis.
