What do ligand gated ion channels do? They open when neurotransmitter binds, allowing ions to enter the neuron and start a graded potential.
What is the main difference between the CNS and PNS The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord, the PNS includes all nerves connecting the CNS to the body.
What are the two branches of the autonomic nervous system? Sympathetic fight or flight and parasympathetic rest and digest
What is the role of endocrine glands? They release hormones into the bloodstream to regulate growth, metabolism, stress response, and reproduction.
How do hormones reach their target cells? Hormones travel through the bloodstream and bind to receptors on specific target cells.
What is the function of the right and left sides of the heart? The right pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs, the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
What are the main components of blood? Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
What is the main function of the lymphatic system It returns excess fluid to the bloodstream and helps defend the body from pathogens through immune responses
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs In the alveoli, where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide exits the blood
What is the primary function of the small intestine To complete digestion and absorb nutrients into the bloodstream using villi and microvilli
