Heart
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| aorta | largest artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body |
| left ventricle | the strong LOWER chamber that pumps oxygen-rich blood into the aorta |
| right ventricle | the LOWER chamber that pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs |
| Left Atrium | the UPPER chamber that receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs. |
| Right Atrium | the UPPER chamber that receives oxygen-poor blood from the body |
| coronary Artery | blood vessels that supply the heart muscle itself with oxygen. |
| Apex | the pointed tip of the heart at the bottom |
| Superior Vena Cava | A large vein that brings blood from the upper body to the right atrium |
| Inferior Vena Cava | A large vein that brings blood from the lower body to the right atrium |
| pulmonary artery | the artery that takes oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle to the lungs |
| pulmonary veins | veins that bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium |
| Chordae Tendineae | "heart strings" that hold valves in place so they don't flip backward |
| Papillary Muscles | Muscles that pull on the chordae tendineae to control valve movement |
| Septum | the wall that separates the right and left sides of the heart |
| tricuspid Valve | the valve between the right atrium and right ventricle |
| biscupid/mitral valve | the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle |
| Aortic Semilunar Valve | the valve that controls blood leaving the left ventricle into the aorta |
| Pulmonary Semilunar Valve | the valve that controls blood leaving the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery |
| brachiocephalic Artery | An artery from the aorta that sends blood to the right arm and head. |
| Left Main Coronary Artery | the main artery that supplies the left side of the heart muscle. |
| Left Anterior Descending (LAD) Coronary Artery | supplies the front of the left side of the heart |
| circumflex Coronary Artery | wraps around the heart to supply the left side and back |
| Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery | supplies the back of the left ventricle |
| Right Coronary Artery | supplies the right side of the heart muscle |
| Posterior Descending Coronary Artery (PDA) | supplies the back of the heart; can come from the right or left coronary artery depending on the person |
