Digestion stack

TermDefinition
▪ Oral Cavity the mouth, the first part of the digestive and respiratory systems
Pharynx the membrane-lined cavity behind the nose and mouth, connecting them to the esophagus.
Epiglottis a flap of cartilage at the root of the tongue, which is depressed during swallowing to cover the opening of the windpipe.
Esophagus the part of the alimentary canal that connects the throat to the stomach.
Stomach a J-shaped organ in the digestive system that temporarily stores food and churns it with digestive juices into a semi-liquid
Small Intestine a long, tube-like organ in the digestive system, connecting the stomach to the large intestine, responsible for digesting food
Duodenum the first part of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach, leading to the jejunum.
Jejunum the part of the small intestine between the duodenum and ileum.
Ileum the third portion of the small intestine, between the jejunum and the cecum.
Cecum a pouch that forms the first part of the large intestine, connecting the small intestine to the colon
Large Intestine the final section of the digestive system responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from remaining food matter
Ascending Colon the first part of the large intestine, located on the right side of the abdomen
Transverse Colon the horizontal, middle section of the large intestine that spans across the upper abdomen.
Descending Colon a segment of the large intestine that extends from the splenic flexure downward and posteriorly
Sigmoid Colon the S-shaped last part of the large intestine, leading into the rectum.
Rectum the final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus.
Anus the opening at the end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste matter leaves the body.
Salivary Glands glands in the mouth that produce saliva to moisten food, aid in digestion, and protect the mouth
Teeth hard structures in the mouth, essential for chewing, speaking, and facial structure
Tongue a muscular organ in the mouth that helps with taste, speech, and swallowing
Uvula a fleshy extension at the back of the soft palate which hangs above the throat.
Liver a large, vital organ in the upper right abdomen that performs key functions like filtering blood
Pancreas a large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum.
Appendix a small, worm-shaped organ in the body or supplementary material at the end of a document
Upper esophageal a high-pressure muscular zone that separates the pharynx (throat) from the esophagus
Lower esophageal (Cardiac) refers to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), also known as the cardiac sphincter
Pyloric refers to the pylorus, the muscular passage between the stomach and the small intestine, or the pyloric sphincter, the muscle that controls the flow of food
