Cellular Processes

QuestionAnswer
Specific movement of particles from areas of high concentration to low concentration Diffusion
Movement in the cell that does NOT require energy Passive Transport
Molecules pass through a cell membrane using transport proteins Facilitated Diffusion
Chemical reactions that convert the energy in food molecules into ATP Cellular respiration
Diffusion of water Osmosis
Movement of substances through a cell membrane only by using the cell's energy Active Transport
Process that breaks down glucose into smaller molecules Glycolysis
A reaction that cells can use to obtain energy from food when oxygen is very low Fermentation
A series of reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food energy molecule glucose and give off oxygen Photosynthesis
The molecule that a cell uses to power many processes in the cell that need chemical energy (usable energy) ATP
The process of photosynthesis occurs where? In the chloroplast
Which is not needed for photosynthesis: Carbon Dioxide, Chlorophyll, ATP, or Sunlight? ATP
What are the products of photosynthesis? Glucose and oxygen
What is step one of cellular respiration called? Glycolysis
Where does step one of cellular respiration occur? Cytoplasm
Where does step two of cellular respiration occur? Mitochondria
Where does the carbon dioxide used in photosynthesis come from? Cellular respiration
The oxygen we breathe comes from where? Photosynthesis
Which of the following is NOT needed for facilitated diffusion: Carrier proteins, Channel proteins, Cell membrane, or Cellular Respiration? Cellular respirations
Name 3 products of alcohol fermentation? ATP, Ethanol, and Carbon Dioxide
What is the process for cellular respiration? 6O2 + C6H12O6 >>>>> ATP + 6CO2 + H2O
What is the chemical formula for photosynthesis? 6CO2 + 6H2O >>sunlight>> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Why does the process of fermentation occur? Fermentation is a type of cellular respiration that only happens when oxygen levels are low, then the cells can get energy.
Name and compare and contrast the two types of fermentation. The two types are alcohol fermentation, that converts glucose to ATP and produces ethanol and CO2. The other is Lactic acid, that converts bacteria and yeast to glucose and produces waste called lactic acid.
Why is energy needed for active transport? Active transport uses energy because it never stops and the cells are always active. Energy is used to transport the cells from low concentration to high concentration.
Compare and contrast cellular respiration and photosynthesis. How are they related? What energy does each produce? Photosynthesis needs the reactants the most, which are Carbon Dioxide and Water (CO2 + H2O), but cellular respiration mostly uses the products, which are Glucose and Oxygen (C6H12O6 +O2).
What three things are needed for photosynthesis ? 1) Carbon Dioxide 2) Sunlight 3) Water
What two things do plants produce through photosynthesis? Glucose and Oxygen
Plants use carbon dioxide and water and the sun's energy to make food in the form of what? Glucose
Where does photosynthesis take place? Chloroplast
Chloroplasts contain what? Chlorophyll
What is the pigment used in photosynthesis? Chlorophyll
Active transport is when materials enter and exit the cell using what? The cell's energy
When material enters the cell, going from low concentration to high concentration, it is called what? Endocytosis
When the vesicle attaches to the inside of the cell membrane and then the cell membrane opens and released materials, this is called what? Exocytosis
