The text begins with Homer’s invocation to which minor goddess? The Odyssey begins with Homer's invocation to the Muse, which is traditionally identified as Calliope, the Muse of epic poetry. The invocation is a plea for divine inspiration to help tell the story of the hero Odysseus.
What do we learn about Odysseus’ journey at the very beginning Odysseus is being held captive by the nymph Calypso on an island, ten years after the Trojan War, while all his men are dead
Books 9-12 rely on Homer’s use of what narrative technique? Books 9-12 rely on Homer's use of a flashback or nested narrative, where Odysseus recounts his adventures in a story within the larger story as he tells them to the Phaeacians
What does in media res mean? in the middle of things
Where is Odysseus when he is telling of his journey? Who is his audience? Odysseus is in the kingdom of Phaeacia, telling his story to the king and queen, Alcinous and Arete.
What adjectives does Homer use to describe the suitors, Polyphemus, etc.? Homer uses adjectives like barbaric, brutal, and greedy to describe the suitors and the giant Polyphemus, who is also called a horrid creature and man-eating.
What in indirect characterization? Showing how a parson acts and is by their words and actions.
What is direct characterization? Straight up describing someone not showing them through speech.
What positive qualities does Odysseus possess? In what ways is he flawed? He shows his bravery, intelligence when he is in the cave and gets them out and his leadership to get them home and his perseverance to get home. He's arrogant he keeps stuff from his men he is like arrogant and selfish.
Where do we see Odysseus effective leadership? He tells his men to cling to the ram when they were in polyphemus cave. This got them out of his danger. He also helped them harm the man and use his powers to free them.
When do we see Odysseus ineffective leadership? He keeps the secret of what is in the bag of wind from the men. This is ineffective because they then guilt themselves in to opening it.
Where do we see Odysseus being strategic? When he calls himself "no man" so then when Polyphemus yells, it sounds like NO MAN Is harming him.
When do we see Odysseus being loyal? He is loyal to his men through his determination. He never gave up on them and always stayed loyal l to his determination to get home.
When do we see Odysseus being disloyal? He fails his crew when the monsters all got him so he lost all his ships and his crew died.
At what point does Odysseus’ arrogance create conflict for him and his men? He doesn't want to tell the men what is in the bag of wind and when he goes to sleep, his men open it and they get right back to where they started with the wind.
When does Odysseus act courageously? Is he ever guilty of cowardice? When he is faced with the cyclops and watched his men get eaten, he stands up to him and kills the guy. He ignores his crew fate and ends up killing men and he's not guilty.
