| deterioration | process of becoming worse | The building was getting old; the deterioration was severe. |
| introspective | thoughtful, inward-looking | It's important to think introspectively- it gives guidance. |
| regression | return to a previous, less advanced stage | The economy later went into a regression. |
| competence | the ability to do something successfully or efficiently | The girl lacked competence to do the chores. |
| stagnate | cease developing; become inactive or dull | The business's financial state became stagnate. |
| conduits | channels for conveying water/other fluid | The water supply was from the conduits underwater. |
| toil | work extremely hard or incessantly (can be a noun) | The workers toiled among the field. |
| strife | angry/ bitter | The friendship tore apart from years of quarrel and strife. |
| blithe | happy or joyous | She had a blithe regard for the rules. |

| alliteration | the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning or adjacent | Sally sells seashells by the seashore. |
| allusion | an expression to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference | This place is similar to the garden of Eden; its beauty is astounding! |
| hyperbole | an exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally | It's so fluffy- I'm going to die! |
| imagery | language that appeals to the senses to help the reader image the text or experience an event like the author | The deliberate text provided lots of imagery. |
| metaphor | a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable | Her voice was music to my ears. |
| personification | the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. | The daisies danced in the wind. |
| simile | a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of s different kind, used to make a description more empathetic or vivid. | The waves seemed as soothing as the warm air in the cold winter. |

| suspense | when the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress/what a character's motivation is | The suspense rose near the middle of the book. |
| foreshadowing | a literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events or things that will happen in a narrative | Before the suspense, there was foreshadowing that it would happen. |
