introspective thoughtful, inward-looking It's important to think introspectively- it gives guidance.
regression return to a previous, less advanced stage The economy later went into a regression.
competence the ability to do something successfully or efficiently The girl lacked competence to do the chores.
stagnate cease developing; become inactive or dull The business's financial state became stagnate.
conduits channels for conveying water/other fluid The water supply was from the conduits underwater.
toil work extremely hard or incessantly (can be a noun) The workers toiled among the field.
strife angry/ bitter The friendship tore apart from years of quarrel and strife.
blithe happy or joyous She had a blithe regard for the rules.
sages profoundly wise men, especially ones who feature in ancient history The sages have very impressive knowledge.
lore a body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person The lore from the scroll shows important history.
meddling interfere in or busy oneself unduly with something that is not one's concern The boy meddled with the controls on the video game.
barren showing no results or achievements; unproductive The stable was barren; no animal was to be found.
active voice the form a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action alone by its subject He writes a letter.
contribute to add or give something that is not expressly stated It's important to contribute to the annual fundraiser.
imply to strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated Try to imply that it's not all that difficult.
reinforce to strengthen/support on idea, usually with additional material The sufficient evidence reinforced the reason.
stanza a group of lines in a poem, often separated by spaces (the paragraph of a poem) The second stanza in the poem was extremely descriptive.
alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning or adjacent Sally sells seashells by the seashore.
allusion an expression to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference This place is similar to the garden of Eden; its beauty is astounding!
hyperbole an exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally It's so fluffy- I'm going to die!
imagery language that appeals to the senses to help the reader image the text or experience an event like the author The deliberate text provided lots of imagery.
metaphor a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable Her voice was music to my ears.
personification the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. The daisies danced in the wind.
simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of s different kind, used to make a description more empathetic or vivid. The waves seemed as soothing as the warm air in the cold winter.
symbolism using objects, characters, actions, etc. to represent or signify something more profound or abstract than its literal existence The teacher used the whiteboard and symbolism to support her lesson. The teacher
suspense when the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress/what a character's motivation is The suspense rose near the middle of the book.
foreshadowing a literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events or things that will happen in a narrative Before the suspense, there was foreshadowing that it would happen.
Latin suffix -tion: complication a circumstance that complicates something, a difficulty The implantations scattered around the city, leading to complication.
Latin prefix sus-/sub- a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater The submarine drifted below surface.
