| obelisks | A four-sided pillar that ends in a pyramid, used as a monument |
| papyrus | A plant that is made into strips and pressed into material on which a person can write |
| peasants | People in a low ranking social class, who often worked in the fields |
| Pharaoh | The ruler of ancient Egypt |
| pyramid | A huge structure that was used as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh and high officials |

| classical civilization | advanced state of development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions |
| democracy | a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting |
| dynasty | a family of rulers who rule over a country for a long period of time |
| empire | a group of countries or regions that are controlled by one ruler or one government |
| Golden Age | a period of period of peace, prosperity, and cultural achievements |
| gynaeceum | rooms in a Greek house set aside for women |
| krater | a large vase used to mix wine and water in Ancient Greece |
| monarchy | a form of government with a king or queen at the head who inherits the position due to his/her family |
| oligarchy | a small group of people having control of a country |
| periodization | dividing a subject into historical eras for purposes of analysis and study |
| republic | a country that is governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader (such as a president) rather than by an inherited king or queen |
