QuestionAnswer
What are neurons specialized to do? Detect stimuli, conduct impulses, and communicate using neurotransmitter.
What triggers a neuron to produce a nerve impulse? A threshold stimulus that leads to an action potential.
What is the central nervous system (CNS)? The brain and spinal cord that integrate sensory input and motor output.
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? All nerves outside the CNS, including spinal and cranial nerves.
What is the autonomic nervous system (ANS)? Controls involuntary functions like cardiac/smooth muscle and glands.
What is a dermatome? A region of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve.
What does systolic blood pressure represent? Arterial pressure during heart contraction.
What is the major function of the lymphatic system? To drain excess interstitial fluid and return it to the bloodstream.
How much plasma leaves capillaries daily? 20 liters, with 17 liters reabsorbed by blood vessels.
What is lymphedema? Swelling caused by blocked or damaged lymphatic vessels.
What is chemical digestion? Enzymatic breakdown of food into absorbable molecule.
