EarthQuakes

QuestionAnswer
Earthquake A movement of trembling of the ground that is caused by a sudden release of energy when rocks along a fault move.
Mercali Scale A seismic scale that measures the size of an earthquake.
Tsunami An earth quake under the clean that can cause a vertical movement of the sea floor that displaces an enormous amount of water
Richter scale A used formula based of the amplitude of the largest wave recorded on a specific type of sesmometer
After shock A smaller earthquake following the main shock of a large earthquake
Fault A fracture or zone in the earth;s crust along which there has been displacement or movement of the rocks on either side.
P-Waves The fastest seismic waves that travel through the earth;s solid, liquid and gaseous layers
S-Waves A type of seismic body wave that shakes the ground side to side, perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling.
Seismoloy The scientific study of earthquakes and seismic waves they generate.
