| Plate Tectonic Theory | Earth's outer shell is broken into large moving plates that float on the molten mantle below. These plates interact at their boundaries. |
| Pangea | supercontinent that existed from approximately 335 to 175 million years ago. |
| Convergent | Plates are moving towards each other. ALWAYS have a trench or some type of mountain range. oceanic to oceanic oceanic to continental continental to continental |
| Subduction (C) | sideways and downwards movement into mantle beneath other plate. |
| Trench (C) | long, narrow, deep depression on seafloor that forms at a subduction zone. |
| Divergent | two plates move away from each other, magma rises to create new crust. |
| Rift (D) | linear zone where lithosphere is pulled apart, continents split, formation of new crust. |
| Mid- Ocean Ridge (D) | underwater mountain range formed by plate tectonics. New oceanic crust is created as magma rises and solidifies. |
| Transform | Boundary where two tectonic plates slide horizontally past one another. |
