Lymphatic/Immune Sys
Medical Terminology Class Lymphatic System Review
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 3 Functions of the Lymphatic System | 1. To absorb fats and fat soluble vitamins from the small intestine 2. To remove waste products & excess fluid from the tissues 3. To aid the immune system in protecting the body against disease 4. attack and destroy pathogens that enter the body |
| Villi | small finger like projections that line the small intestine and contains blood vessels and lacteals |
| Blood vessels | are located in the Villi of the small intestine; absorb nutrients from food and take it directly to the bloodstream |
| Lacteals | are located in the Villi of the small intestine; absorb fats and fat soluble vitamins to be transported throughout the body |
| What else does the Lymphatic System do? | destroys pathogens and takes away foreign substances present in tissues |
| The purpose of the Lymphatic System working with the Immune System? | together the immune system and the lymph nodes of the Lymphatic system protect the body against microorganism and disease |
| Lymph | clear, watery fluid transported by lymph vessels that takes waste and proteins away from the spaces in between cells |
| Lymphatic vessels and ducts | carry lymph fluid |
| Lymph nodes | small, bean-shaped glands that contain specialized lymphocytes that are capable of destroying pathogens |
| Lymph node types | cervical (neck), axillary (armpits), inguinal (groin) |
| Tonsils | 3 masses of lymphatic tissue that form a protective ring around the back of the nose and upper throat |
| Thymus Gland | lymphatic system gland located in the chest that produces t-cells (lymphocytes that coordinate immune defenses) |
| Thyroid Gland (to remember thyroid think of adenoids which are nasopharyngeal tonsils in the nose and throat) | lymphatic system gland located in the throat that produces hormones regulating metabolism |
| Adenoids | Nasopharyngeal (nose +throat) tonsils located in the nasopharynx |
| Appendix | hangs from the 1st portion of the large intestine and stops pathogens from getting through the digestive track |
| Spleen | lymphatic gland located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, inferior to the diaphragm |
| Function of the Spleen | 1. filters microorganisms, foreign materials from blood 2. forms lymphocytes and monocytes 3. destroys worn-out blood cells and releases their hemoglobin to be reused |
| Complement system cells | Proteins that circulate in inactive form. When needed they combine with antibodies to dissolve pathogens and other foreign cells. |
| Functions of the Immune System | 1. Maintain good health 2. Protect the body from harmful substances that including: pathogens, allergens, toxins, malignant cells |
| Pathogens | disease causing microorganisms |
| Allergens | substances that produce allergic reactions |
| Toxins | poisonous or harmful substances |
| Malignant cells | cancer cells |
| Intact Skin | The human body's first line of defense that wraps the body in a physical barrier |
| Antigen | any substance that the body regards as foreign (viruses, bacteria, toxins, transplanted tissues) |
| Antibody or Immunoglobullins | disease fighting protein created by the immune system inr response to the presence of an antigen |
