Physiology Week 7-13

TermDefinition
Nerve Signaling Process by which nerve cells (neurons) transmit electrical disturbances from one point to another within the body
Central Nervous System (CNS) The part of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) The division of the nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) A division of the PNS that controls involuntary motor commands
General Senses Sensory modalities processed by the nervous system that are widely istributed throughout the body
Special Senses Senses that have specialized organs dedicated to them
Endocrine Regulation Control of body functions by hormones secreted into the bloodstream by endocrine glands; regulates many slower, long-term processes
Endocrine Glands Glands of the endocrine system that secrete hormones directly into the blood rather than through ducts
Hemostasis The physiological process the body uses to stop bleeding after blood vessel injury
Cardiac Conduction System The cardiac conduction system is a specialized network of the heart's pacemaker cells
