| Stratified squamous epithelium | Is characterized by multiple layers of cells with typically flattened squamous cells at the free, or outer, surface of the epithelial sheet. |
| Fascia | A general name for the fibrous connective tissue masses that can be seen by the unaided eye in many locations throughout the body. |
| Keratinization | The process by which cells in this layer are formed from cells in deeper layers of the epidermis and then filled with keratin and moved to the surface. |
