TermDefinition
Aldesterone A hormone that increases sodium reabsorption and potassium secretion in the kidneys helping regulate blood volume and blood pressure
ADH (Antidiuretic Hormone) A hormone that increases water reabsorption in the collecting duct reducing urine output and increasing blood volume
Tidal volume The amount of air inhaled or exhaled during normal breathing
Vital capacity The maximum amount of air a person can exhale after taking the deepest breath possible
Electrolytes Charged ions such as sodium potassium and chloride that help regulate nerve impulses muscle contraction and fluid balance
Nephron The functional unit of the kidney responsible for filtering blood and forming urine
Bowman's capsule A cup shaped structure that surrounds the glomerulus and collects the filtrate
Buffer A substance that resists changes in pH by accepting or releasing hydrogen ions
Dehydration A fluid imbalance where water loss exceeds intake
Renal Pelvis The funnel shaped structure that collects urine before it enters the ureter
