TermDefinition
Depolorization Movement of the membrane potential toward zero
Hyperpolarization Movement of the membrane potential away from zero
Brachial plexus Found deep within the shoulder. It passes from the ventral rami of spinal nerves C5 through T1, beneath the clavicle (collarbone), and toward the arm
Lumbar plexus Formed by the intermingling of fibers from the first four lumbar nerves. This network of nerves is located in the lumbar region of the back near the psoas muscle. T
Olfaction Our sense of smell. It helps us interpret our environment by detecting molecules called odorants given off by organisms and substances around us.
Extrinsic eye muscles Skeletal muscles that attach to the out-side of the eyeball and to the bones of the orbit. They move the eyeball in any desired direction and are, of course, voluntary muscles.
Pericardial space Space between the visceral layer adhering to the heart and the parietal layer adhering to the inside of the fibrous sac. It contains 10 to 15 ml of pericardial fluid, a lubricating fluid secreted by the serous membrane.
Capillary Microscopic vessel that carries blood between arteries and veins and permits exchange of substances be-tween the blood and the surrounding tissue.
Lymphoid tissue a type of reticular tissue that contains lymphocytes and other defensive cells.
Lymph nodes Also known as lymph glands, are oval or bean-shaped structures. a biological filter placed in the channel of several afferent lymph vessels
Phagocytosis A major component in the body's second line of defense. The ingestion and destruction of microorganisms or other small particles.
Functional residual capacity The amount of air left in the lungs at the end of a normal expiration, that is, without contracting expiratory muscles.
Deglutition The process of swallowing.
Mastication The process of chewing/chewing movements.
Peristalsis wavelike ripple of the muscle layer of a hollow organ.
