QuestionAnswer
How do neurons help maintain homeostasis? Neurons detect changes in the body and send signals that trigger a response, helping keep the body stable.
How does a neuron send a nerve impulse and communicate with other cells? A neuron creates an electrical impulse when stimulated, and then releases neurotransmitters that pass the message to the next cell.
What are the two major divisions of the nervous system? The central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
Why are the CNS and PNS separated into two divisions? To make studying and understanding the nervous system easier.
How do the nervous and endocrine systems differ in the way they send signals through the body? The nervous system sends fast electrical impulses through neurons, while the endocrine system sends slower chemical signals called hormones through the bloodstream.
How does the endocrine system contribute to the body’s stress response? The endocrine system releases hormones that create stress responses, such as increased heart rate and higher blood pressure.
What are the main functions of the circulatory system? The circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues and removes waste products from the body.
How much does the heart work in a day? The heart beats about 100,000 times a day and pumps around 5,000 gallons of blood through the body.
What is the main function of the lymphatic system? The lymphatic system drains excess interstitial fluid from tissues and returns it to the bloodstream.
What happens when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked? Fluid cannot drain properly, causing protein-rich fluid to build up in tissues, leading to swelling called lymphedema.
What is the main goal of respiratory physiology? To maintain homeostasis by ensuring cells get enough oxygen and carbon dioxide is removed, even when body demands and environmental conditions change.
Why is understanding the anatomy of the respiratory system important for studying respiratory physiology? Because knowing the structure helps explain how air is distributed and how gas exchange happens between the lungs, blood, and tissues.
What is the main focus of studying the digestive system in anatomy? Learning the structures and organization of the digestive tract.
What is the primary function of the digestive system? To bring essential nutrients into the body so they can be delivered to every cell.
