QuestionAnswer
What division of the nervous system controls voluntary movement? The somatic nervous system.
What division controls involuntary functions like heart rate? The autonomic nervous system (ANS).
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system? “Fight or flight” increases HR, dilates pupils, increases glucose release.
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system? “Rest and digest” slows HR, increases digestion and gland activity.
What hormone is released by the posterior pituitary to increase water reabsorption? ADH (antidiuretic hormone).
What hormone regulates metabolic rate? Thyroid hormone (T3/T4).
What is the function of the lymphatic system? Returns excess interstitial fluid to the bloodstream and supports immunity.
Where does most nutrient absorption occur? Small intestine, especially the jejunum.
What enzyme begins the digestion of carbohydrates in the mouth? Salivary amylase.
What is the role of bile? Emulsifies fats to increase surface area for lipase digestion.
