QuestionAnswer
What is temporal summation? Rapid repeated stimulation of a postsynaptic neuron causing the effects to add up to reach threshold.
What neurotransmitter is broken down by acetylcholinesterase? Acetylcholine.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do during “fight or flight”? Increases heart rate, dilates bronchioles, increases glucose release, dilates skeletal muscle vessels
What is the role of the cerebellum? Coordinates muscle movement, balance, and posture.
What do lymph nodes do? Filter lymph and remove pathogens.
What cells release antibodies? cells (plasma cells).
What is tidal volume? The amount of air inhaled or exhaled during normal breathing.
What is vital capacity? The maximum amount of air that can be inhaled and exhaled.
What is the Bohr effect? Increased CO₂ causes hemoglobin to release oxygen more easily.
What is peristalsis? Wave-like muscle contractions that move food along the GI tract.
What enzyme begins protein digestion in the stomach? Pepsin.
What hormone stimulates the gallbladder to release bile? Cholecystokinin (CCK).
Where does most nutrient absorption occur? Small intestine.
What vessels carry absorbed fats into the bloodstream? Lacteals (lymph capillaries).
Which brain area regulates basic breathing rhythm? Medullary rhythmicity center.
