What is the main function of red blood cells? To transport oxygen using hemoglobin and carry carbon dioxide to the lungs.
What determines a person’s blood type (A, B, AB, O)? The presence or absence of A and B antigens on red blood cell surfaces.
What node of the heart initiates the heartbeat? The sinoatrial (SA) node, the heart’s natural pacemaker.
What is cardiac output? The amount of blood pumped per minute (heart rate × stroke volume).
What structural feature allows capillaries to be the site of exchange? Their thin, one-cell-thick walls that allow diffusion of gases and nutrients.
What is the main function of the lymphatic system? . To return excess tissue fluid to the bloodstream and support immune defense.
What is the difference between innate and adaptive immunity? Innate immunity is nonspecific and immediate; adaptive immunity is specific and develops memory.
How does gas exchange occur in the alveoli? By simple diffusion — oxygen enters blood, carbon dioxide exits.
What is peristalsis? Wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract.
What hormone lowers blood glucose after a meal? Insulin
What is the nephron’s main function in the kidney? To filter blood, reabsorb needed substances, and form urine.
What does ADH (antidiuretic hormone) do? It increases water reabsorption in the kidneys, reducing urine output.
What is an action potential? A rapid electrical signal that travels along a neuron.
What is the sympathetic division of the ANS responsible for? Fight-or-flight responses like increased heart rate and increased blood flow to muscles.
What gland controls metabolic rate by releasing T3 and T4? The thyroid gland.
