TermDefinition
Active voice POS: n. Definition: the form a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action done by its subject. (subject + verb + object) Example sentence: The author wrote in the active voice to make their work more engaging.
Contribute POS: v. Definition: To add or give something to help support a specific idea or reach a common purpose. Example sentence: I try to contribute to food drives when I can.
Imply POS: v. Definition: To strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated. Example sentence: I tend to imply what I mean instead of just saying it.
Reinforce POS: v. Definition: To strengthen or support an idea, usually with additional material. Example sentence: I included a counterclaim to reinforce my essay.
Stanza POS: n. Definition: A group of lines in a poem, often separated by spaces. (the “paragraph” of a poem) Example sentence: There were three stanzas in the poem.
Alliteration POS: n. Definition: Language that appeals to the senses to help the reader imagine a text or to experience an event like the author. Example sentence: Fair is foul, and foul is fair in the filthy air.
Allusion POS: n. Definition: Using objects, characters, actions, events, etc. (symbols) to represent or signify something more profound or abstract than its literal existence. Example sentence: You're a regular Einstein!
Hyperbole POS: n. Definition: An exaggeration to drive in a point. Example sentence: It's so fluffy, I'm gonna die!
Imagery POS: n. Definition: Language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell) to help the reader image a text or to experience an event like the author. Example sentence: She uses imagery to develop her story.
Metaphor POS: n. Definition: Compares two things that are not alike without using like or as. Example sentence: You are my sunshine.
Personification POS: n. Definition: Gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas. Example sentence: The leaves danced in the wind.
Simile POS: n. Definition: Compares two things that are not alike using like or as. Example sentence: I ran like the wind.
Symbolism POS: n. Definition: Using objects, characters, actions, etc. (symbols) to represent/signify something more profound/abstract than it's literal existence. Example sentence: The fantasy story used symbolism to help readers understand the flow of magic.
Suspense POS: n. Definition: When the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress or what a character’s motivation is. Example sentence: I couldn't look away from the book; there was so much suspense!
Foreshadowing POS: n. Definition: A literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events/things that will happen in a narrative Example sentence: The author used so much foreshadowing that I knew exactly what would happen.
Latin suffix -tion Defintion of -tion: Turns a v. into a n.; "the act of" Word using -tion: Deterioration Definition of deterioration: Process of becoming worse. Sentence using deterioration: Humans often go through physical deterioration as they get older.
Latin prefix sus-/sub- Defintion of sus-/sub-: Under or below Word using sus-/sub-: Subconscious Definition of subconscious: Mental activity that occurs without someone's being aware of it. Sentence using subconscious: Dreams are controlled by your subconscious.
Subconscious POS: n. Definition: Mental activity that occurs without someone's being aware of it. Example sentence: Dreams are controlled by your subconscious.
Suspicion POS: n. Definition: Feeling of doubt or mistrust. Example sentence: I had the suspicion that he was misleading me on purpose.
Despised POS: v. Definition: Hated; scorned. Example sentence: She despised me and tried to make my life miserable.
Deterioration POS: n. Definition: Process of becoming worse. Example sentence: Humans often go through physical deterioration as they get older.
Introspective POS: adj. Definition: Thoughtful; inward looking. Example sentence: Introspective journals help people learn who they are.
Regression POS: n. Definition: Return to a previous, less advanced state. Example sentence: Increasing prices can cause a regression in demand.
Competence POS: n. Definition: The ability to do something successfully or efficiently. Example sentence: People who lack competence often struggle to find jobs.
Stagnate POS: v. Definition: Cease developing; become inactive or dull. Example sentence: Unless new ideas are introduced, creativity will stagnate.
Conduits POS: n. Definition: Channels for conveying water or other fluid. Example sentence: The conduits that carried water through the city needed to be repaired.
Toil POS: v. Definition: Work extremely hard or incessantly. (can be a noun) Example sentence: Farmers toil in the fields for us to have food.
Strife POS: n. Definition: Angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict. Example sentence: Political strife often leads to families fleeing the region.
Blithe POS: adj. Definition: Happy or joyous. Example sentence: She walked with a blithe and carefree step.
Sages POS: n. Definition: Profoundly wise men, especially ones who feature in ancient history or legend. Example sentence: Wise sages and philosophers shared their insight.
Lore POS: n. Definition: A body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth. Example sentence: The lore of the village was passed down for generations.
Meddling POS: Participle/adj. Definition: Interfere in or busy oneself unduly with something that is not one's concern. Example sentence: My meddling neighbor is always commenting on stuff that doesn't concern her.
Barren POS: adj. Definition: Showing no results or achievements; unproductive. Example sentence: Barren farmland is unable to produce crops.
