What is an action potential? A rapid electrical signal that travels down a neuron when sodium rushes in and potassium moves out
What is the difference between continuous and saltatory conduction? Continuous conduction happens on unmyelinated axons and is slower, while saltatory conduction “jumps” between nodes on myelinated axons and is much faster
What do chemical synapses use to communicate? Neurotransmitters that cross the synaptic cleft and bind to receptors on the next cell
What is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and what does it do? CSF is a clear fluid that protects the brain and spinal cord, carries nutrients, and removes waste
What is the function of the spinal cord? It sends signals to and from the brain and handles quick reflexes through reflex arcs
What does the autonomic nervous system (ANS) control? Involuntary functions like heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress responses
What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions? Sympathetic is “fight or flight,” increasing alertness and energy use; parasympathetic is “rest and digest,” helping the body relax and recover
What is the main job of the lymphatic system? To return excess fluid to the bloodstream, help with immunity, and absorb fats from the digestive system
What is lymphedema? Swelling caused by blocked or damaged lymphatic vessels that prevent fluid from draining properly
What is the main purpose of the respiratory system? To bring oxygen into the body, remove carbon dioxide, and help maintain homeostasis in changing conditions
