Active Voice N The form a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action done by it's subject The dog bit the boy.
Contribute V To add to or give something to help support a specific idea or reach a purpose. He did not contribute to the meetings.
Imply V To strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated. Nowhere in the abstract do the researchers imply a causal link
Reinforce V To strengthen or support an idea usually with additional material. we have two weeks to reinforce our troops
Stanza N A group of lines in a poem that is separated with spaces. The stanza continues the poem's play with the withholding of images.
Alliteration N When the same sound or letters appear at the beginning of words in a sentence. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
Allusion N Author makes a reference to a famous story, person, object, or event. The beginning of the book contains an allusion that hints at how the story will end.
Hyperbole N An exaggeration to drive a point. I have a million things to do today
Imagery N Language that appeases to its senses to help the reader imagine it. Tennyson uses imagery to create a lyrical emotion
Metaphor N Compares 2 unlike things without the use of like or as. He had a heart of gold.
Personification N Gives characteristics to inanimate objects. The trees danced in the wind.
Simile N Compares 2 unlike things with the use of like or as. He was as cold as ice.
Symbolism N Using objects, characters, actions, events, etc. to represent something profound to its literal existence. he has always believed in the importance of symbolism in garden art
Suspense N State of feeling excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. come on, Fran, don't keep me in suspense!
Foreshadowing N Literacy device where the author provides hints for later events that will happen. The old clock on the wall had stopped ticking exactly at midnight
-tion Turns into a noun Contribution A gift or payment to a common fund or collection. He made a lasting contribution by designing the modern radio telescope
sus-/sub- Substitute A person or thing acting or serving in place of another. Soy milk is used as a substitute for dairy milk
Subconscious N Mental activity that occurs without knowing it. your subconscious mind controls most of what you do
Suspicion N Feeling of doubt and mistrust. a suspicion of a smile
Despised V Hated; Scorned I despised her.
Deterioration N Process of becoming worse. the aim of the treatment was to prevent further deterioration of his eyesight
Introspective ADJ. Thoughtful looking. he's introspective and difficult to get to know
Regression N Return to previous, less advanced state. he seemed able to produce a regression in this disease
Competence N The ability to do something successfully efficiently. the court has no competence to deal with this
Stagnant V Lease developing; becoming inactive or dull. "If your water has been stagnant for some time, treat it before you drink it.
Conduits N Channels for conveying water or other fluids. These karst cavities form as conduits for water flow between input and output points.
Toil V (can be a noun) Work extremely hard or incessantly she began to toil up the cliff path
Strife N Angry or bitter disagreement about fundamental issues. the country had been torn apart by wars and civil strife
Blithe ADJ. Happy or joyous. a blithe disregard for the rules of the road
Sages N Profoundly wise men, especially ones who feature ones who feature in ancient history or legend. According to legend, all the sages once gathered in the Himalayas.
Lore N Body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or helping a particular group typically passed from person to person by word of mouth. It has been the subject of lore and the object of cravings for centuries.
Meddling V Interfere with or busy themselves with something of none of their concern. I was meddling with the handle when it fell off.
Barren ADJ. Showing no results or achievement; Unproductive. I walked along the barren lands as the sun parched my skin.
