Heart Flashcards

TermDefinition
Aorta the largest artery in the body, responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart's left ventricle to the rest of the body
Left Ventricle the lower-left chamber of the heart that receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium and pumps it to the rest of the body through the aorta
Right Ventricle a chamber in the heart that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen
Left Atrium one of the four chambers of the heart that receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it into the left ventricle.
Right Atrium one of the four chambers of the heart, located in the upper right side. Its main function is to receive oxygen-poor blood from the body and pump it into the right ventricle
Coronary Artery the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood.
Apex the pointed or narrowed tip of a cone-shaped or rounded organ.
Superior Vena Cava large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, arms, and upper chest to the right atrium of the heart
Inferior Vena Cava carrying deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body—including the legs, abdomen, and pelvis—back to the right side of the heart
Pulmonary Artery blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood from the right side of your heart to your lungs
Pulmonary Veins a blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left side of the heart
Cordae Tendinea tough, fibrous cords, often called "heart strings," that connect the heart's mitral and tricuspid valves to the papillary muscles
Papillary Muscles a small, pillar-like muscle inside the heart's ventricles that helps control the flow of blood through the heart's valves
Septum a dividing wall or membrane especially between bodily spaces or masses of soft tissue
Tricuspid Valve a valve in the heart with three flaps that controls blood flow between the heart's two right chambers: the right atrium and the right ventricle
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve a heart valve with two flaps that regulates blood flow from the heart's upper left chamber (left atrium) to the lower left chamber (left ventricle)
Aortic Semilunar Valve connect your heart ventricles (lower chambers) and arteries
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve a valve of the heart that lies between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, and has three cusps
Brachiocephalic Artery a major blood vessel that branches off the aortic arch and supplies blood to the right arm, head, and neck.
Left Main Coronary Artery a short artery that branches from the aorta to supply oxygen-rich blood to the left side of the heart
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery a major blood vessel that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the front and left side of the heart muscle.
Circumflex Coronary Artery a major blood vessel that branches from the left main coronary artery and curves around the left side and back of the heart.
Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery a major artery that branches off the left coronary artery and supplies blood to the front and left side of the heart
Right Coronary Artery sends blood to the right side of the heart
Posterior DescendingCoronary Artery supplies the posterior third of the interventricular septum and the inferior wall of the left ventricle
