Nervous System The body’s communication system that sends and receives messages
Central Nervous System (CNS) The brain and spinal cord or the control center
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) All nerves outside the brain and spinal cord; carries messages to and from the CNS.
Brain The organ that controls thoughts, emotions, movement, and body functions.
Gyrus The raised “bumps” or folds on the surface of the brain.
Sulcus The shallow grooves or “valleys” between the gyri on the brain
Cerebrum The biggest part of the brain; handles thinking, memory, senses, and movement.
Frontal Lobe Controls decision-making, planning, behavior, and movement.
Parietal Lobe Processes touch, temperature, pain, and body position.
Temporal Lobe Handles hearing, memory, and understanding language.
Occipital Lobe Processes vision
Cerebellum Controls balance, coordination, and smooth movement.
Brain Stem Connects the brain to the spinal cord; controls basic life functions like breathing and heart rate.
Pons Part of the brain stem that helps with breathing, sleep, and sending signals.
Medulla Oblongata Controls automatic functions like heartbeat and breathing
Spinal Cord A long bundle of nerves that carries signals between the brain and body.
Sensory Neuron Carries information to the brain/spinal cord (like touch or pain).
Motor Neuron Carries commands from the brain/spinal cord to muscles.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Damage to the brain caused by a blow or jolt to the head.
Nerves Bundles of neurons that carry messages around the body.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) A long-term brain disease caused by repeated head injuries.
Concussion A mild brain injury caused by a hit to the head that temporarily affects brain function.
Neurological Exam A test doctors use to check how well the brain, nerves, and spinal cord are working.
